Water, product and settled material
A bund can contain several layers: rainwater above settled solids, traces of the stored product on the surface, or thicker residue around the tank supports. These materials may need different recovery arrangements. Water from a bund should not be assumed suitable for discharge simply because it looks clean. Its origin, possible contamination and the applicable site permissions need checking before deciding whether it can be discharged lawfully or must be collected as waste.
Operating records and information about leaks or previous spills help establish what may be present. Where the contents are uncertain, sampling and waste classification can form a separate part of the scope. The quantity to be removed also matters: depth at one low point does not describe the whole floor.
